Meet The Flower Kittens

As I regain control of my keyboard, I am going to take this blog in a new direction, namely, keeping folks aware of my various foster kittens, their antics, and hopefully, a few videos.

I will be naming them according to various 'themes,' an idea I brazenly stole from "Foster Dad John" of The Critter Room fame.  I'm sure many of you fellow cat aficionados are familiar with him.

Lacking his technical expertise, however, I'll have to make do with still photos and as I said, 'hopefully' a few videos.

While the current set of kittens is not my first batch of fosters, they are the first to fall into my new themed categories.  These are the "Flower" kittens; they are all named after various lovely blooms.

The photos below are just the very first, just after I brought them to the house, and set them up in cages to acclimate for a time to new sights and smells.  I promise, there will be more photos, singles, as well as probably some that are blurred from RKM (Rapid Kitty Motion)!

Without further ado, here is your first peek at the Flower Kittens:

In the top photo, left to right, are Pansy (female); Chrys (male); and Tulip (female).  In the bottom photo, wanting a Diva-style solo shot, is Petunia (female).

They are "about" 7 weeks old, and will be available for adoption through Homeless Animals' Lifeline Organization (H.A.L.O.) of East Contra Costa County, California. You can see pets available for adoption on their website.  You can also take a look  at H.A.L.O.'s Facebook page .

These cuties will be available in a little over a month.  They must be a minimum of 2 pounds/2 months old (in favor of the weight requirement, regardless of age).  At that point, they can be spayed/neutered, and will have at least their first shots, and probably the second round, as well.
They do not go up for adoption before those things are done, and kitties are healed.  They will be 'ready to go' to their forever homes at that point.

My friends,

We have not had access to our blog for some time.  Mom has been busy writing articles and taking care of Dad.  He is not doing very well; lots of health problems.  At last, they finally figured out what the latest problem was, that was sending him to the emergency room about every week.

Meanwhile, Mom is worried about Tigger.  He is the second-oldest of us kitties; he turned 13 this year, and he has been throwing up a lot.  Mom thought it was just hairballs, at first, and took to the extreme measure of shaving the end of his tail.  (He has always sucked his tail since he was a baby, and never stopped that habit)!  But, it did not seem to help, and this was way more throwing up than just hairballs.  Mom has to keep getting out the big carpet shampoo machine to clean up.
The last two nights, he has not slept with Mom or Dad like usual, but hiding inside the cube toys, and last night in the carrier Mom uses to take us to the V-E-T. ...  He did not eat dinner last night or breakfast this morning.  Mom is very worried.

But, in other news, there was something funny that happened, and we asked mom to draw a picture, so here it is (click to make bigger) :

Mom says she isn't an artist and can't draw, but we think this came out pretty good.  MOL

Cheers, dear blogging friends!

  2.  Your sister is not a punching bag; do not bop her on the head.
  3.  There is nothing in the closet that concerns cats.
  4.  The sound of shoelaces being tied is not a call to action!
  5.  The water bowl is not a washing basin for toys.
  6.  The couch is not your scratching post.
  7.  Two O’clock in the morning is not playtime!
  8.  Human food, not cat food is kept in the refrigerator; keep your noses out!
  9.  Pillows are for human heads, not cat butts.

It's February!

Mom has been furry bad abowt lettin' us write on our bloggie.  She said she's sorry, but she haz been too busy to set up the compooter fur us.

Dad is haffing sum seerius health trubbles, and mom iz tired alla time.  Iz dat any excuse to keep us frum our bloggie?  As cats, we don't fink so.  After all, we is s'posed to be da center of their world, right?  Cats first, then peeps.

Anyhoo...we is here today, and so we haz updates fur our furriends.
1)  Lil Miss Fuzz and Bobbie had their first purrthday back in August, 2012, on the 8th.
2)  Nugget is gonna haff his first purrthday on  March 15, 2013.
3)  Patches is still hanging on, she's an old lady now, she was 14 years old back in September.
4)  Me, Tigger--I is insulted to be told I is turning into an old man--I gonna be 13 in April.  Dat's not so old, you finks?
5)  Munchkin is only gonna be 7 in April, but she is turned into a crab, allus hissin' and growlin' at da rest of da kittehs--'cept me--we is buddies.
6)  Jigsaw Puzzle is abowt 5 years old, we finks....he is a nice kitteh--he takes care of all da youngters--naps wif dem, gives dem baffs, and such.

And dat's all 7 of us kittehs.  Me, Tigger, I is tired of all da uproar wif new kittehs.  I don't want no more.  Mom haz to stop getting foster kittehs, cuz she tends to keep dem.  Dad sez so.  Good.

We misses bisiting wif all our kittey furriends on da Blogosphere.  Mom is spendin' too much time writing artikles on her Hub Pages site.  She sez it pays her green papers.  Well, poo!  Since when are stoopid green papers more important than kittehs?

We finks she is just tryin' to not pay attenshun to how sick Dad is, on accownt of she's furry worried abowt hims.   So, she does stoopid bizzy werks instead.
Any suggestions fur how to get more time on our bloggie would be furry much appurrsheeated.

Fanks you all fur reading, and sticking by us, even if we haven't been able to be so faithful....

Signed, Tigger

Waving Bye-Bye To Nugget....(Mom is gonna Sniffle!)

Well, just when we all got settled in, and all the fambly bosses sitchooated again, and we thot Mom and Dad wuz gonna be keeping da little Nugget guy...along comes some dude that seed him on da rescue groop's adopshun site, and wants him.

Nugget

Mom is furry sads, cuz she really loves da little guy, and thot that now he's 6 months old, dat no one would want him, and she'd end up keepin him.  (Don't tell anyone, cuz we don' want Mom mad at us..but we all finks she already has plenty of kittehs in dis howse, and it will be good not to has a pesky little brat powncin' us and playin' wif our tails!)

But, she said he wuzn't s'posed to stay so long, and dunno howcome he is still here and his brofur and sisfur got snapped up right away when dey wuz all little tiny kittehs....  Anyways, we heard Mom talking on da talky-box to da rescue lady, and told her dat der will be no more fosters fur a while, on accownt of Dad has to has sum surguries...so it's just us regoolars fur a while now...Dat's a good fing, don' you finks?

But I guess dat's the way da catnip spills....

Oh--nip?  Did sumone spill sum nip?  I'm on it!

Hello--We've Missed Everyone!

This is Nugget, our latest Foster...
To all my dear, wonderful acquaintances from the CB...I have (obviously) been among the missing for quite some time, and the kitties have been deprived of their blogging privileges.

That is my fault, and I must apologize.  There are a number of reasons this has happened, but it has all been around personal issues.  Among other things, I have  had quite a time trying to get back into my Blogger account--none of my passwords wanted to work, and neither did the password reset link function.  I was going nuts!  (Short trip!)
I was  delighted and dismayed all at once to discover, when I finally did get back in, that there were NINE wonderful comments on my last post, which was nearly a year ago!  Several months, at any rate!  I loved the comments, appreciated them (the delight), but I was dismayed to think that I had not seen them in a timely fashion, and offered a proper thank you and reply.

My husband's health has been a huge factor.  He's got multiple problems, and we've spent a year back and forth to doctor appointments, tests of one sort and another, all trying to find out when and if they can start fixing things for him.  The biggest problem was that in August of 2011, he had a heart attack, and had to have a stent placed.  That, in and of itself, was a simple procedure, and he came through just fine.  He's getting good at it--that was "only" his 13th heart attack, and his 4th or 5th stent placement.  He already had a coronary bypass back in 2001.
However, that bypass surgery caused a small hernia to form.  It was not a big problem either, at the time.  Fast forward to January of this year (2012), and he caught a bad cold.  He coughed so hard and so much that the hernia tore, and now reaches all the way down his belly, making it hard for him to get a deep breath.
Naturally, he wants it fixed.  Complication:  after the stent placement, the doctors want you on Plavix for a full year.  That is a blood thinner, so, no surgeries until that year is over.
However, the tear of the hernia followed a fall in November of 2011, at which time he tore the rotator cuff in his shoulder.  It has been causing him excruciating pain ever since, so now, he is virtually housebound, there not being much he can do without pain or breathing difficulties.
Come June, he started a round of appointments to evaluate the outlook for surgery, and darned if they didn't find a blood clot in his heart!  So, they put him on a course of Coumadin.  (For those who don't know what it is, it is a very severe blood thinner, generically known as Warfarin--a.k.a.  rat poison!!)  Between that, the Plavix, and the baby aspirin they had him on, ALL surgery was a no-go!

Meanwhile, we were spending the last year jumping through hoops and filling out all manner of duplicated paperwork and stressing out to the max to get a mortgage modification so as not to lose our house!  To become homeless would be a death sentence for him, with all his problems (and rents in the area are higher than what we were paying for our mortgage--which was about to triple, due to the deferred interest capping out...)
Finally, the modification came through, and we were able to let go of that particular stressor.

During this time, I was just too stressed out to juggle very many things online, and ALL of my blogs, not just this one, fell by the wayside, as I was concentrating on building up my work on Hub Pages, where I am finally actually earning some green stuff....not a lot, but it is slowly building up month by month.

Now, hubby's latest problem was some severe pain that made him think he was having yet another heart attack, so off to the ER...but no...just very severe gas bubbles from the hernia issue.  WHEW!!  That was a relief, because this was at the end of August--the 'magic' date for getting off the Plavix, and the 6 months on the Coumadin...so they can okay him for his surgeries.  (If it had been the heart, we'd have been back to square one at 'no-go.' )  So, he now has an appointment with the surgeon to assess how they are going to repair the hernia.  At last.  Progress.  Once that is fixed, they can do the shoulder, then hopefully, he can have his life back!
Once he's fixed, I'm hoping I can get my bum knee seen to, and repaired..and then I can have MY life back, too, and we can both get back to riding our bikes, and me to my rollerblading!

So, at this point, it is my hope that the kitties can return to blogging.  The "little monskers" from the last post the cats made, are now a year old and still just as cute as little buttons...neither of the girls are a very big kitty.
Meantime, we fostered a new batch of kittens starting at the end of April...3 more siblings (a little Tortie and two orange tabbies, one of whom had long fluffy fur).  The tortie and the fluffball   were adopted quickly in June at the "Maddie's Fund" event.  However, the last little boy, "Nugget," is now 6 months old, and is being passed over at every single weekend adoption that we hold.  (The group I'm with is called "H.A.L.O.," for "Homeless Animals' Lifeline Organization.)

I think it's looking like we may have another Foster Failure with him.  He is so used to playing with all the other cats, and is sooooooooooo attached to us (ok, we like him, too!), that he would surely feel betrayed at this point to be suddenly taken from all he's known for all of his life he can remember, and given to someone else....he now runs and hides when the carrier comes out to go to the adoption events every weekend....and when he gets home, he hides and sleeps...and acts depressed.
But, that will be the end.  No more kittens will be allowed to steal our hearts to that extent.  That will put us at 7, and 2 over the 'legal limit,' for our city.  (Although, I don't think they can afford to have staff knocking on everyone's door to count cats....)  But, it's also a budget issue.
With surgeries for both of us on the horizon, though, we'll be taking a hiatus from fostering probably until "kitten season" 2013.
So, I think that about brings us current, and I hope I won't have to deprive the kitties of their blog for such a long time ever again!

Stand Up, Speak Up for the Animals!

Today’s post is for a very special cause, as part of the “Blog the Change for Animals” challenge.  Our topic is the sorry state of the nation’s so-called animal shelters.  Too many animals entrusted to these facilities suffer everything from inadequate care to being killed outright--(so I have published in blood red type).

“Euthanasia,” they call it.  Euthanasia, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is as follows:

“The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.”  (Emphases mine.)

There is nothing ethical about the reasons for killing animals at the very facilities responsible for their temporary care until a permanent home can be found.  Instead, they are concerned only with their bottom line, and available space.  They do not discriminate overmuch about which animals are chosen to be killed.  In some cases, it could be older or ill animals, but it is far more likely to be perfectly healthy adult animals or baby animals just beginning their journey of life.  They are not 'suffering from terminal illnesses or incurable conditions.'

Instead of focusing their efforts on education, adoption, spaying and neutering of family pets and TNR (trap/neuter/release) programs for feral populations (especially cats), these places would rather collect and kill.

It is a shameful practice, and reduces to nearly insignificant numbers the equally horrific tales of individuals committing animal abuse and causing extreme harm and death.  However, there is a conspiracy of silence in the media:  only individuals perpetrating cruelty upon animals are exposed and held accountable under the laws of the land.

The ultimate irony lies in the very names these agencies give themselves:  “American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” (ASPCA);  “Humane Society of the United States” (HSUS); and local branches of the ASPCA, going by the shortened “SPCA” label.  Happily,  a few shelters are beginning to get the word, and are adopting out more pets than they kill, but the numbers are still skewed too far toward the high-kill shelters.

Even more shocking are the recent reports coming out about the so-called animal rights group, “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).  PETA also operates a supposed shelter, but has managed to adopt out  only 8 animals of the many thousands it took in during 2009, the last year for which figures are available as of this writing.  The rest, they killed!  Check out that story here: http://petakillsanimals.com/

This is not a pretty subject, and there is no way to dress it up to appease those easily shocked or sickened.  In fact, it is that very shock and horror that is needed to create a massive cry of outrage from the public at large.  It is unconscionable that the great majority of these organizations run on volunteer labor and monetary donations from the public.  They get the donations by running bleeding-heart campaigns in the media, convincing animal lovers to open their wallets, and then betray the trust by acting contrarily to the advertising on which they waste the donations.  Before you donate, please do research on the organization asking for your hard-earned dollars.

The statistics speak for themselves:  the facilities that like to call themselves shelters are in fact, themselves directly responsible for the wanton slaughter of over four million dogs and cats annually.  Four million!  Yes, a four followed by six zeroes! 4,000,000! Annually! It’s a huge number, and it must come to a stop.  They are murderers, plain and simple.

Even in instances where rescue groups have offered to pull the animal and find it a home, and physical rehabilitation if needed, the animals were quickly put down instead of being turned over to the rescues.  This happens more often than you would think, and speaks of horrible, sadistic, evil people who kill for the sheer sick pleasure it must give them.

There are laws proposed such as this one dubbed "Oreo's Law," to force the shelters to live up to their names, yet the bills are getting tabled by political pressure from these very same organizations.  What can you or I do to help stem this bloody tide and turn  the screws on these powerful lobbies?  Nathan Winograd’s No Kill Nation is a good place to start (http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/). The link to "Oreo's Law," mentioned above, is found from a link on this site.

At his website you will find links to the various laws being proposed, and a comprehensive detailing of the problems being faced with convincing the directors of these agencies who are interested in protecting only their salaries, and not the animals with whose lives they’ve been entrusted.

You can start the ball rolling by calling attention to this blog post.  Share it on Face Book, Tweet, Digg, StumbleUpon, e-mail or whatever other means you may use to spread the word.  Working together, we can do this.

Thank you, from the bottom of all the "anipal's" hearts, thank you!

How to Give Your Pet a Pill, by Meowmy

Today, a little humor…we allow mom to use our bloggie.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR PET A PILL

Dogs:

1)  Hide the pill in some canned food, a piece of cheese, chunk of hot dog, glob of margarine, or any other kind of food.  Offer it to the dog, (who is prancing about in eager anticipation),  and watch as he swallows it whole and wants more.  You are done.  Repeat for all remaining doses.

Cats:

1)  Hide the pill in a piece of cheese, soft treat, or anything else the cat likes.  Watch as he      thoughtfully chews it and swallows.
2)  At the next dose, watch the cat now refuse to eat his former favorite treat.  Add the pill to a different food.  Watch as the cat sniffs the food, and tries to bury it.
3)  Attempt to place the pill directly into the cat’s mouth.
4)  Discard soggy pill.  Fetch bandages for your fingers.  Call your doctor to see if your tetanus shot is  current.
5)  Get fresh pill.  Get a towel, and try to wrap the cat to hold it still.  Remove pill from your ear, and fetch bandages for your arms.
6)  Ask for assistance.  Have helper get cat down from on top of china cabinet.  Both of you wrap cat in towel to immobilize him.  Retrieve pill from folds of towel.  Call your insurance to see if your  friend is covered for multiple scratches.
7)  Sneak up on the cat from behind, blocking his rearward escape with your feet.  Reach over his  head, covering his eyes, and pry open his mouth.  Get bandages for the fingers of your other  hand.
8)  Spend half an hour looking for the cat.  Use push-broom to shove him out from under the exact center of your bed.  Repeat a dozen times, as the cat runs to the opposite side and scoots to the same hiding place.  He loves this new game!
9)   Decide to wait until the cat is asleep to sneak up and deliver the pill on the sly.  Wake up from your own nap to find the cat wide awake and staring at you with an evil eye.
10)  Crush the pill and add it to the cat’s water.
11)  Take cat to vet for dehydration after he’s refused to drink the contaminated water.  While there, tell the vet to just give the cat an injection of the medicine.
12)  Go home and pour yourself a good stiff drink.

So, if any of yous knows how to fix dis, or can ree-furr her to sumone who does, she would appurrciate if furry much!  Fanks you!
